Mapua Libraries receive papers of distinguished "Father of Filipino Grammar" Lope K. Santos
Mapua Libraries (Intramuros) were recently chosen to be the stewards of the personal archives of noted linguist, socialist, and "Father of Filipino Grammar" Lope K. Santos. The significant collection spans a long and distinguished career, beginning when Santos started publishing fragments of his first novel "Banaag at Sikat" in 1903, through his years as a professor in the Filipino Languages. Often referred to as “the father of Filipino grammar,” Santos revolutionized the field of promoting the national language for the Philippines and paved the way for transformational grammar and universal grammar. His book Balarila ng Wikang Pambansa was considered groundbreaking. He also made significant contributions to the fields of politics (labor reforms), socialist activism, dupluhan and philosophy of language. Over the years, Santos has been awarded numerous prizes, including literact accolades. He founded the group TANIW, which stands for Taliba ng Inang Wika(Sentinel of the Mother Language). The collection also reflects Santos' political activism and outspoken support for freedom of speech and labor justice. The addition of Santos'
personal archives, and a large portion of his personal library, augments a small existing collection of Santos' papers already in the care of the Mapua Libraries’ Institute Archives. Staff from the Mapua SOCIP are in the beginning stages of transferring material to the Institute Archives and Special Collections. Initial work in organizing the collection will occur this year, with additional work on improving access to the collection, including online access to portions of it, continuing over the next several years. When the work is done, scholars will have unprecedented access to an enormous depth and breadth of material from one of the world’s most renowned linguists and top intellectual minds.
